With winter fading away into memory and the tantalizing promise of summer, spring is most definitely here. So get ready to embrace the sunshine and bare those legs, in the hottest designer shorts women's fashion has to offer this season.

It's no wonder shorts have become a staple in the hotter months of the year, with their flirty and fun aesthetics. However we shouldn't take them for granted, it wasn't until the 1930s that this must-have item became socially acceptable to wear. Luckily now we can enjoy them as a spring and summer favourite and thanks to the variety of designs, colours and outfit combinations, they can come out for any occasion. Most of us wouldn't dream of going away abroad without packing a trusty pair of shorts in there somewhere, and even without the promise of holiday sunshine, paired with tights, shorts become the perfect summer fashion item, come rain or shine.

The classic short has to be the 'Daisy Duke', named after the 1970s TV show 'The Dukes of Hazard' where cut-offs were first flaunted on screen by one of the characters. For the longer-limbed cut-offs are still a popular choice of short, although the original 'cut-off' edges have been widely replaced this season by neater edges and turn-ups, that, while they maintain the shape, create a smarter finish. G-Star, Levi and 7 for all mankind have produced smart, tailored cut-offs this season.

It's not just in denim that Daisy Dukes are being produced; thanks to the creations of Tibi, Diane von Furstenberg and Thread Social, shorts can be found in an array 70s revived and reinvented styles including leather, suede and cord. Or add a touch of the glamorous with lace, jacquard and sequins. The cut-off shorts are not only transcending day-time to night, with Sessun's latest feature of a lavish pair of gold mustard shorts, this item will easily spill over into winter when teamed with tights and heavy knitwear. Leather brings a rawer edge to the short with Alice by Temperley, IRO and Theory.

Other fabrics making an appearance include light and breezy silks and linen from Miu Miu for a truly summery short. Or for a longer, smarter short look to YMC (You Must Create) who have produced a stunning pair of culottes in black and white check that looks set to be another fashion favourite this spring.

For most of your spring wardrobe multi-colours will dominate, but in the short department more subdued shades of neutrals, blacks, navies and whites look set to tick the trend boxes. For the curvier figure YMC have created a cord pair of shorts with a pleated front, while those with an athletic build should stick to shorts with a smart flat front and a high waist.

Create a series of looks when you team with silk blouses, casual tee's and heavy knits or accessorise your season must-have shorts with belts and loose waist ties and beads. Whether worn with or without tights, this season is all about showing that you've got legs and you know how to use them!
