Blogging these days have become extremely popular amongst so many different groups of people. Why would you want to blog in the first place? Well, blogging is similar to writing your own journal but the advantage is that you can share your thoughts as well as news with all your friends as well as the rest of the Internet.

Blogging is not only for fun, in fact there are so many people all over the world making a good living out of the blogging world. How does this work? Well, the general idea is to create a popular website or blog, choose a topic or niche that interests you, and start writing about it.

How can a blog earn you money? Picture this: you write about the latest hottest topic in your niche that is well talked about. People come to your blog via the search engines because they are interested in what you have to say or what you have to teach them. You place ads across the various pages in your blog and these advertisements get viewed by your visitors and clicked on. The ads in turn make you money per click. This is how people generally monetize their websites.

However, it can remain private if you want it to. Some people just do not want to make their sites public, for whatever their reasons. You can set your blog to not be indexed by search engines or you can apply a password lock so that only you can view it.

Is starting your own blog costly? Not at all. In fact, there are so many free options out there on the Internet, allowing you to set up your own online journal for free.

A type of blog that you might have already heard of is WordPress. WordPress is free to download and use and is a very popular blogging platform used by millions of people who love writing online journals over the world. Free in in a sense that downloading and using the platform will not cost you a cent. However, you will need to pay for your own hosting (hosting is where you upload your blog-just in case you didn't know).

Depending on what you want to do, hosting services can charge you between $10 per month to about $30 per month. The cheapest I've seen is five dollars for a monthly setup. Host Gator is one provider that I find exceptionally reliable, but there are also other ones around which are more competitive. You should shop around and look at the different options available before settling on one. A great place to get more ideas on which providers are good, is a website building forum.

If you're after totally free hosting, there are a variety of cost free services at your disposal. The best thing about these types of sites is that they are catered to people who have no idea about building and designing a blog. These free services are incredibly easy to setup and maintain and it only takes you a few minutes to get started and to get your website online to share with the world.

Some free examples are TypePad and Blogger.com and they cost nothing to join and there is nothing to pay either - no ongoing fees. The downside is that you have no control over these sites you build and they can sometimes be taken down for no reason at all - stuff happens. However, these are pretty rare happenings in my opinion.
