It is through participation and optimization that your website is distributed which brings traffic to your site. You must become familiar with the communities and participate through social media to establish a name for yourself before anyone will take serious notice of you.

Social media optimization is unlike website optimization but it should also be an overall optimization strategy part. You create strategy with social media. You generate contents and you also tag the web. Your brand will begin to be recognized by other community members if it goes through the process of becoming a part of the community.

Make Money Online - Are Directories Still Effective?

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

If you make money online, you most likely have paid attention to Search Engine Optimization. There has been a lot of speculation in recent years about the continued validity of web directories and whether they still have a place in Search Engine Optimization. A directory is a hierarchical list of links commonly grouped into logical categories. In the early days of the Internet and search engines the number of sites linking to a particular site was used as the main factor in determining the value of a website. This lead to the creation of link farms which were basically no more that sites that just contained pages of links, similar to directories. Most modern search engines now instantly recognize link farms and penalize or ignore them from search engine listings.

Many people still find directories a useful resource when looking for things on the Internet although with the arrival of social bookmarking sites they have stiff competition. A well maintained directory can not only be useful resource for any site visitor, but also provide valuable inbound links to a site.

What is a good directory?

To determine whether it is worthwhile submitting to a directory it is probably worth asking yourself whether whether in the absence of a search engine you would personally use that directory? If the directory is full of broken links or irrelevant or poorly written content then it is unlikely to be worthwhile. The good folk at Google sometime manually adjust their index to remove or lower the value of anything that appears to be a 'spammy' directory.

There is a lot of debate over paid and free directories and their value as a web-resource. Both types of directory should have equal value in the face of a search engine however paid directories tend to be better maintained as they usually have a team of moderators checking each submissions. Free directories generally depend upon volunteers which lead to people playing the system to allow their own links to be submitted to the directory.

Recognized Directories

There are many directories that are recognized as ranking well in the main search engine algorithms but the main two that most people will come across are DMOZ and the Yahoo! directory.

Make Money Online - Why You Need a Sitemap

If you plan to make money online with a website, you need a sitemap. A sitemap is often considered redundant in the process of building a website, and that is indeed the fact if you made a sitemap for the sake of having one. By highlighting the importance of having a well constructed sitemap, you will be able to tailor your own sitemap to suit your own needs.

1) Navigation purposes

A sitemap literally acts as a map of your site. If your visitors browses your site and gets lost between the thousands of pages on your site, they can always refer to your sitemap to see where they are, and navigate through your pages with the utmost ease.

2) Conveying your site's theme

When your visitors load up your sitemap, they will get the gist of your site within a very short amount of time. There is no need to get the "big picture" of your site by reading through each page, and by doing that you will be saving your visitors' time.

3) Site optimization purposes

When you create a sitemap, you are actually creating a single page which contains links to every single page on your site. Imagine what happens when search engine robots hit this page -- they will follow the links on the sitemap and naturally every single page of your site gets indexed by search engines! It is also for this purpose that a link to the sitemap has to be placed prominently on the front page of your website.

4) Organization and relevance

A sitemap enables you to have a complete bird's eye view of your site structure, and whenever you need to add new content or new sections, you will be able to take the existing hierarchy into consideration just by glancing at the sitemap. As a result, you will have a perfectly organized site with everything sorted according to their relevance.

Make Money Online - Keyword Optimization

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Keyword optimization is something that many people trying to make money online abuse. Optimizing a website for a particular keyword phrase is not about placing it all over with little to no thought. To truly make the most out of a single domain name, one must carefully use their chosen keyword phrases to keep things easy to read and well-liked by search engines.

An internet marketer setting up their website to have a keyword density that composes 10% of the article or more is not uncommon. Unfortunately, many of these people never see much profit. It is quite simply impossible to really profit with a website that's density is a bit too high. If you're absolutely new to search engine marketing and keyword optimization in general, you may be asking why. The more the better is the usual way things go. Absolutely not. Things should be done in moderation always.

Say you create a website based on a niche keyword. First you register a domain with the keyword within it, what's next? Article(s), layout, tags, and titles are the next step. So, you write a 400 word article on the subject with the keyword placed within it 7 times. That alone is at least 1.7% density, which is not bad. Next up is the rest of page that the article will be on. This should include meta and other tags, as well as the title or titles. If you only have 50 other words in total on that page aside from the article and an additional 10 instances of the keyword, then your density is at least around 3.7%. This is uncomfortable territory.

A rule of thumb if you are not into multiplying and dividing to find the keyword is to see what sounds natural. For instance, does it seem normal if the keyword appears twice within a few sentences in the same paragraph? Probably not. So be careful with the use of keyword optimization on your end.
